Find your California used car dealer course
6 hours · Initial course. Choose the initial course when you are preparing to apply for a California used vehicle dealer or wholesale-only dealer license. DMV determines which education and licensing requirements apply to your application.
4 hours · Ongoing course. Choose the ongoing course when you are an existing California used vehicle dealer seeking continuing education for renewal. Confirm your renewal requirements and due date with DMV before enrolling.
Pre-licensing or continuing education?
The initial course introduces prospective dealers to licensing, vehicle sales and dealership responsibilities. The ongoing course helps existing dealers review those responsibilities for continuing education. Both programs include online instruction, practical case activities and worksheets, and a final exam.
Frequently asked questions
Which dealer course do I need?
Choose the six-hour initial (pre-licensing) course if you are applying for a California used vehicle dealer or wholesale-only dealer license. Choose the four-hour ongoing (continuing education) course if you are an existing dealer renewing your license. Your DMV application checklist or renewal notice tells you which one applies.
How long are the courses?
The initial course requires at least six hours of study and the ongoing course at least four. Your progress saves as you go, so you can split the time across as many sessions as you like.
Does finishing a course license me or renew my license?
No. Education is one requirement. DMV also reviews your application and, for a new license, administers the dealer test. Follow DMV’s instructions for the remaining steps.
