How Long Does Online Traffic School Take in California?

Updated July 18, 2026 · By RoadWise Traffic School, CA DMV License #E0821

California law sets a minimum length for every licensed online traffic school course: 340 minutes of instruction — about 5 hours and 40 minutes. Any licensed school, including ours, must meet it. Here's how that plays out in practice and how to plan around your court date.

Why every legitimate course takes about the same time

The 340-minute minimum is a DMV licensing requirement, not a school's choice. A site promising you can "finish in 15 minutes" is describing a course that either isn't licensed in California or isn't operating the way its license requires — and an invalid completion won't satisfy your court. You can check any school's license on the DMV's official list.

You don't have to do it in one sitting

Our course is fully self-paced: 13 lessons you can take in any number of sessions, on any device. Your progress saves automatically, so most students spread the course over a few evenings. The only hard deadline is the completion date your court set — the school doesn't impose its own.

The final exam, and why you should leave a buffer

After the lessons you take a 25-question multiple-choice final exam, and you need 70% (18 correct) to pass. The questions come from the course material, and most students pass on the first try. If you don't, you get a second attempt after a 7-day waiting period — which is exactly why you shouldn't start the course the night before your court deadline. Give yourself at least a week or two of margin.

When you pass, we report your completion to the DMV electronically the same day, and you can download your completion receipt immediately.

What if the court deadline is too close?

Contact the court before the due date. Most California courts will grant an extension for traffic school completion if you ask in advance — few are sympathetic after the deadline has passed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I finish the whole course in one day?

Yes — if you set aside roughly six hours, you can complete the lessons and take the exam in a single day. The 340-minute instruction minimum still applies; no licensed course can legitimately be faster.

Is there a timer on the lessons?

The course tracks instruction time to meet the state's 340-minute requirement. Within that, you control the pace — pause anytime and pick up where you left off.

How fast does the court find out I finished?

We report completions to the DMV electronically the same day you pass. Courts then update their records; if your deadline is close, keep your completion receipt as proof of the date you finished.
