Find your California TVS operator course
8 hours · Initial course. Choose the 8-hour course if you are applying for an original TVS operator license or reinstating one: as the school’s owner, or as the employee the owner designates to direct and manage it. DMV decides what your application requires; course completion is one part of it.
4 hours · Renewal course. Choose the 4-hour course if you hold a current California TVS operator license and are renewing it. DMV accepts a 4-hour program certificate with your renewal in place of retaking the operator examination; check your renewal notice for what yours requires.
Initial or renewal?
Both courses share the same core lessons on running a licensed traffic violator school: curriculum and teaching, accessibility, records, instructors, operator duties, regulations, office procedures and DMV actions. The 8-hour course adds 14 applied lessons that work through realistic cases, from student intake to a capstone week.
Plan your next step
Your Certificate of Completion is one requirement of the operator license application or renewal, and it is valid for one year from completion. DMV decides what your application requires and reviews the rest of it.
