How California points work in the first place

Most moving violations — speeding, running a stop sign or red light, unsafe lane changes — add one point to your record. Serious offenses like DUI or reckless driving add two. Under the DMV's Negligent Operator Treatment System, you risk a license suspension at 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24 months, or 8 in 36 months. A single one-point ticket typically stays on your record for about three years.

What completing traffic school actually does

• The conviction is masked as confidential on your public driving record — anyone pulling your record, including insurance companies, doesn't see it.
• The point doesn't count toward the suspension thresholds above.
• Because insurers can't see the conviction, it can't be used to raise your premium or take away a good-driver discount.

What it doesn't do: it doesn't refund your fine, it doesn't apply to two-point violations, and the DMV and courts still keep an internal record of the citation — which is how the once-per-18-months limit is enforced.

The catch: once every 18 months

You can only use traffic school to mask a conviction once every 18 months, measured violation date to violation date.
