Red Light Tickets in California: Points, Cameras, and Traffic School

First, identify which kind of citation you have

Your notice will tell you. Look for whether it is addressed to you as the driver or to the registered owner, whether it cites a Vehicle Code section, and whether it says anything about a DMV point or a civil penalty.

Officer-issued red light tickets

This is the conventional case. A red light violation under VC 21453 is a moving violation worth one point on your DMV record, where it generally stays for about three years and is visible to insurers. It's the same shape of problem as a routine speeding ticket.

It's also generally traffic-school eligible: a one-point, non-alcohol infraction in a non-commercial vehicle with a valid license, provided you haven't used traffic school for a violation in the previous 18 months. Full criteria in our California traffic school eligibility guide.

Automated camera citations and SB 720

California's camera enforcement landscape changed in October 2025, when Senate Bill 720 was signed. Among other things, it broadened the authority of cities and counties to operate red light camera programs and provided for violations to be handled as civil penalties issued to the registered owner rather than as criminal-process citations against the driver, with first-violation fines capped at a relatively low amount.

The practical consequence for you: where a citation is issued as a civil penalty with no DMV point, there's no point for traffic school to mask, and no reason to buy a course. Where a camera program still produces a point-carrying Vehicle Code citation, the usual rules apply.

How to work out what to do

1. Read the notice. Identify the issuing agency, whether a Vehicle Code section is charged, and whether a DMV point is mentioned.
2. Check with the court or agency named on it if the notice is ambiguous. This is a two-minute call that can save you a course fee.
3. If a point is involved and you're eligible, elect traffic school when you pay and complete a course before the court's deadline.
4. If no point is involved, pay the penalty or contest it. Traffic school does nothing for you here.

Is a red light ticket worth taking traffic school for?

If it carries a point, the calculation is the same as for any one-point violation: you're weighing the court's administrative fee plus a course fee against three years of a visible conviction on the record your insurer pulls. California's good driver discount is worth at least 20% by law and requires no more than one point in three years.
